The Chequamegon Bay NICA Mountain Bike Team is a youth mountain biking program for student-athletes in grades 6–12 from across our region. We proudly support riders from Ashland, Washburn, Bayfield, and South Shore High Schools, along with all of their feeder middle schools. Our team welcomes new and experienced riders alike, focusing on skill-building, confidence, teamwork, and a lifelong love of cycling.

We practice on the CAMBA trails at Mt. Ashwabay, where our riders develop trail skills in a supportive, encouraging environment led by certified NICA coaches. As part of the Wisconsin Interscholastic Cycling League, we emphasize fun, safety, inclusivity, respect, and personal growth.

  • Registration is typically due by July 1 of each year with practices start in late July (date varies).

  • The team practices 2x a week on Mondays and Wednesdays with optional adventure rides on the weekend.

  • Race or “festival” weekends take place across the state starting Labor Day weekend though the end of October. Previous races (including photos) can be found on the WI NICA website.

Our team culture is built around the values of the National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA). These principles guide how we ride, learn, compete, and support one another:

  • Inclusivity — Every student-athlete is welcome, regardless of experience, ability, or background.

  • Equity — We work to ensure all riders have access to opportunities, support, and encouragement.

  • Respect — We treat teammates, coaches, volunteers, trails, and the environment with care.

  • Safety — We ride and practice responsibly, prioritizing skills development and good judgment.

  • Community — We build friendships, teamwork, and connection across our schools and region.

  • Personal Growth — We celebrate effort, resilience, fun, and progress. Both on and off the bike.
